Situated on the northern tip of the gorgeous Island of Lefkada lies the beach at Agios Ioannis - Milli. This is a very popular spot for kiters and wind surfers of intermediate and expert levels. Due to the specifics of weather patterns under the mountain, the part of the beach to the left of the access road from Lefkada and Milos Beach Club is used for windsurfing, while kiters will need to go further up the beach into a designated area on the right. Beginners might struggle here because of some rocks on the waterline which need to be avoided. The best times for surfing are between May to September.
The beach itself is around 5 kms long and is facing northwest. It consists of smooth pebbles and sand and has no obstacles or hazards to mention. To get here you will need to drive onto the island and head north after crossing the bridge. Follow the signs for Agios Ioannis and the beach where there is ample parking.
The main wind directions are westerly and northerly or variations thereof and these directions also work really well here. During June through to August the thermal winds kick in around midday and you get some really nice winds. During the winter the wind is not as frequent and when it does it can be a little gusty. The water quality is crystal clear and conditions are flat to choppy when the thermal winds blow, while in the beginning and end of the season the wind is a bit less powerful, but its northwesterly direction can produce waves of up to 3 meters. The water temperature remains somewhere between 14-26 degrees depending upon the season, so in the winter months you will need to suit up.
The facilities at Agios Ioannis - Milli are very good for watersports. You have accommodation close by, which is set up to receive surfers and their equipment. You also have a windsurfing and kiting club, with an equipment rental shop, shower and toilet facilities, bars, and internet access right on the beach. If you fancy a bite to eat, there are some Tavernas. The island's capital Lefkada town is only 2 kms away and here you can find some good shopping and nightlife.
Watch out for large rocks on the waterline and be mindful of surfing zones particularly during the summer months. Also keep a look out for swimmers and bathers in and around the water during these times.
The beach of Agios Ioannis is considered as one of the best beaches in Europe for windsurf and kite surf. Till noon, the sea is calm but in the afternoon the north western wind creates the appropriate conditions for these sports. Windsurf and kite surf competitions, even European competitions, are held every year.
Sailing conditions
Thermal winds during summer. When it is sunny, 99% change on wind. Good winds: West, Northwest, North. The summer here is the best time to go kitesurfing. Can ride from May until October almost every day. Thermals every day! Only 10-15 days in August the wind drops a bit and you need your big size kites. Best time to get here is in June and July. Best wind less people on the beach! General wind directions: onshore and sideshore. Winter not that often wind and a bit gusty too.
Inoltre se siete in residence potete comprarvi pesce, frutta e verdura (tutto saporitissimo) a prezzi molto bassi e cucinare a casa.
